Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) was established on 1st january 1823 as “Ecole de Médicine de Pondicherry. and it was renamed as Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research” (JIPMER) on 13th July 1964. Its teaching faculty consists of 300 experienced teachers and 565 resident doctors. It is under the direct administrative control of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
